Electrochemical Oxidation Products: How It Works, and MEET the Full Product Line

Electrode material determines what happens inside the electrochemical reactor/electrolytic cell; trial and bench modules narrow the design on a small sample; pilot modules confirm it at real flow. This page covers the mechanism, how EO combines with other treatment steps, and the full product line built around it.

How Electro Oxidation Works

Two distinct mechanisms drive treatment, and most real streams see both happening at once.

Direct Oxidation Indirect (Mediated) Oxidation Pollutant adsorbs onto the anode surface Loses electrons directly to the electrode Transforms into simpler, biodegradable substances some fully mineralized to CO₂ and H₂O Water molecules near the anode are oxidized Hydroxyl radicals (•OH) generated — non-selective, higher oxidation potential than ozone or H₂O₂ Pollutants mineralized in the bulk solution Chloride streams (e.g. refinery wastewater): Cl₂ / HOCl also form

Direct oxidation happens when pollutants adsorb onto the anode’s surface and lose electrons directly to the electrode. This transforms them into less complex, more biodegradable substances — some organic pollutants mineralize fully into CO₂ and H₂O.

Indirect (mediated) oxidation relies on highly reactive species generated around the anode — principally hydroxyl radicals (•OH), formed from oxidized water molecules. Hydroxyl radicals attack organic pollutants non-selectively and mineralize them in solution, with a higher oxidation potential than ozone or hydrogen peroxide and shorter contact time needed to do it. Ozone (O₃) and hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) form simultaneously and contribute additional oxidation. In chloride-containing streams — refinery wastewater, for instance — chlorine gas (Cl₂) and hypochlorite (HOCl) generate at the anode as strong oxidants in their own right.

For a deeper look at direct and indirect mechanisms in the context of a specific electrode material, see the BDD electrode page.

Treatment Combinations

Electro-oxidation rarely runs alone in a full treatment train. Here’s how it typically pairs with other steps, and what each combination is doing.

EO + Biological Treatment

EO degrades persistent organic pollutants into smaller, more biodegradable intermediates, improving the B/C ratio so a downstream biological step has something to work with.

Electrocoagulation + EO

EC removes suspended solids and some dissolved organics before EO, the same role screening, filtration, sedimentation, or DAF would play — improving the quality of influent of the EO.

Membrane Filtration + EO

EO cuts fouling in MF/UF/NF/RO systems by removing organic pollutants upstream, while membranes can concentrate pollutants for EO treatment or serve a final polishing role.

Adsorption + EO

Adsorption after EO captures the final traces of organic pollutants. Many pilot-scale EO modular units now include an integrated adsorption stage as standard, rather than requiring a separate downstream process.

EO + Ozonation / Peroxone

Combining EO with ozone-based advanced oxidation boosts generation of reactive species, especially reactive oxygen species, improving removal efficiency against recalcitrant organic pollutants.

How These Fit Together

The diagram below maps each combination to the specific role it plays around the EO stage — upstream conditioning, downstream polishing, or reactive-species enhancement.

Electro- Oxidation Biological Treatment Improves B/C ratio for downstream biology Electrocoagulation Removes solids & colloids ahead of EO Membrane Filtration Cuts fouling; concentrates feed for EO or polishing Adsorption Captures final traces of organic pollutants Ozonation / Peroxone Boosts reactive oxygen species generation

Applications: Where EO Products Fit

Application ranges of electro oxidation an a wide range of industrial sectors, most of them defined by wastewater that conventional treatment struggles to handle:

These wastewaters are known complex organic streams that pose a major threat to ecosystems and human health, and a persistent challenge for wastewater management facilities generally. Conventional treatment approaches at existing facilities are often limited in their ability to eliminate persistent organic pollutants, let alone meet treatment objectives or keep pace with current and future regulation.

Electro-oxidation’s oxidation and treatment efficiency has proven effective for the complete degradation of these persistent organic compounds where conventional approaches fall short.

Pollutant Destruction Capability

The decentralized and modular electro-oxidation treatment (DMEOT) model applies electrochemical oxidation on-site for industrial wastewater, targeting cost-effective, efficient destruction of persistent organic contaminants using high-efficiency BDD electrodes as the anode material in the electrochemical reactor:

PAHs & Industrial Chemicals

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), solvents, phenols, dyes, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and hexachlorobenzene

PPCPs & Pesticides

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs)

Dioxins & Furans

Highly toxic dioxins and furans, among the most persistent and hazardous organic contaminant classes

How the Electro Oxidation Product Line Fits Together

Choosing Between Electro Oxidation Product Lines, Which Electro Oxidation System Fits Me?

MMO plates work well where chloride is available to drive indirect oxidation. BDD plates make more sense in low-chloride streams, or where chlorate and perchlorate formation need to be avoided entirely.

A benchtop trial cell is a fast first look at a small sample. A bench module runs the full removal curve and byproduct screen used in a formal treatability report.

Once bench results confirm feasibility, a pilot module validates that result at real flow, real hydraulics, and fouling conditions bench testing can’t reproduce.

Most trial, bench, and pilot modules accept multiple electrode plate formats, so a material comparison can carry through from bench to pilot without changing equipment.
