As you may have noticed, this part of content will be all about petrochemical wastewater, a typical wastewater from the oil and gas industry, we are gonna discuss about sources, impacts, compositions of petrochemical wastewater, and conventional treatment methods to treat petrochemical waste streams, and what is more, how Advanced Electro Oxidaiton (AEO) technologies are applied to tackle the challenges, mainly complex organic compounds such as phenols, sulfides, ammonia, cyanides and other organic pollutants. And the other part of this page is about the mechanism of Advanced Electro Oxidation (AEO) functions on petrochemical effluents, removal and treatment efficiency of electro oxidation, and advantages of electro oxidation in practical applications. Explore how Evoaeo’s innovative advanced electro oxidation water treatment technology be a solution for petrochemical industries.
Impacts of Petrochemical Wastewater from Oil & Gas Industry
Oil refining processes generate huge amounts of wastewater, and this volume continues to rise significantly. Currently, most of this wastewater is disposed of through underground injection, where the water can no longer be accessed or used. Underground injection is reaching its limits in some areas, requiring new approaches to handle wastewater from oil and gas operations. Several steps would be necessary to treat and renew this wastewater for other purposes. The primary activities of the oil and gas industry are crude oil and natural gas extraction, transformation of crude oil into its components, and energy production from petroleum and natural gas derivatives. Wastewater from the oil and gas industry can differ in each process, but it has some basic characteristics: high content of fats, oils and hydrocarbons, dissolved organic matter, petroleum residues, high suspended solids, high viscosity, dissolved salts and heavy metals. The components that need to be removed most effectively are oils, greases, hydrocarbons, suspended solids and dissolved organic matter.
Sources of Petrochemical Wastewater from Oil & Gas Industry
As you may have noticed, cooling systems, cooling towers to be precise, are the major water consumers due to the high demand on water. Meanwhile there was direct contact between water and hydro-carbons within hydrop-treating,distillation, hydro-cracking processes during the production processes, which generates certain amount of wastewater.
Check main source of petrochemical waste streams, Evoaeo team hope that this sub-section will help you comprehend which process to install a wastewater treatment product, to crib the impact of these wastewater.
Based on previous projects and data, we concluded that there are mainly four processes use large amount of water, within the petroleum refinering processes: steam generation in boilers (16%),
Cooling systems, approximately 57%,
Production processes, approx. 18%,
Steam generation in boilers, approaching 17%
Followed by other processes, which is about 8%
Composition of Petrochemical Wastewater
Crude oil extraction, transfer crude oil into its components, and energy production from petroleum and natural gas derivatives are the main activities within the petrochemical industry, and all processes invloves water, wastewater stream generated from the oil and gas industry are different in each process, for instance, produced water from offshore oil and gas extraction platform, cooling water, and etc. In this section we summarize the conventional pollutants found in petrochemical wastewater, regardless of the sources of these wastewater, they have some basic characteristics:
High content of fats, oils and grease, hydrocarbons, dissolved organic matter, mainly phenols, ammonias, cyanides, benzene polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene, among others.) Petroleum residues High suspended solids High viscosity Dissolved salts and heavy metals. The composition of wastewater from oil and gas production and refinering industries varies from the sourcing processes we mentioned above.
Conventional Treatment Methods of Petrochemical Wastewater
Primary treatment of petrochemical wastewater is the first step to treat effluents from this sector, primary treatment stage rely heavily on physical separation processes which aimed to separate oil waste, water waste and solid waste via flotation and sedimentation.
Typical primary treatment methods such as hydrocarbon separation, or sedimentation tanks are widely used to remove most of the TSS from the effluents. separate solids float to the surface of water, and then remove these solids as sludge. Physical separation within primary treatment stage realized a major separation of solid with waste water, effluents of this stage will be pumped into water treatment system for secondary treatment. Secondary treatment of wastewater from oil and gas industry is aimed to remove organic pollutants, metals, and other pollutants. MBR, activated sludge, trickling filters, and oxidation lagoons are typical biological water treatment methods, and these are also the conventional water treatment methods adopted within secondary treatment stage, set to degrade COD (chemical oxygen demand) and BOD (biological oxygen demand). Combination of physical and chemical treatment methods are adopted within the tertiary water treatment stage. Tertiary treatment of wastewater from oil and gas industry are aimed to improve effluents quality and compliance with local environmental regulations. Conventional tertiary treatment methods within the tertiary stage designed to remove toxic pollutants and non-biodegradable compounds are physical and chemical treatment methods, or combination of physical and chemical treatment methods.
Electro Oxidation Treatment of Petrochemical Wastewater
In this section, we are going to discuss about advanced electro oxidation technology implemented to remove organic compounds in produced wastewater, process water and effluent streams, especially Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), phenolic substances ,chemical oxygen demand (COD), and heteroatom compounds. As one of the most effective tertiary treatment for removaling refractory and complex organic pollutants in petrochemical effluents.
Performance of electro oxidation was studied by using BDD anodes, electrochemical reactors, our newly developed modular units to locate the best experimental conditions for PAHs, phenol and COD removal. Operating conditions resulted in the maximum reduction of phenol and COD with current density (CD=26 mA/cm2), pH=4, support electrolyte (NaCl=2.1 g/l), electrode distance was set to 3mm, and time of 60 minutes, Phenol and COD removal were 99.37% and 99.83% respectively. These experiments provide critical insights into an innovative water treatment method. What is more, electro oxidation technology demonstrated unparalleled performance and degrading efficiency in high concentration, and high salinity petrochemical effluents.
